The assignment will include light-weight material structural analysis as well as assisting in the performance analysis and dynamic simulation of ships and other marine vehicles in ocean waves or in the vicinity of other ships and ocean structures. Specific duties include ultimate strength and fatigue analysis ship structures with a focus on lightweight applications, reliability and probabilistic analysis frameworks, application of advanced hydrodynamics numerical analysis tools, geometry and configuration modeling, and analysis of data from numerical simulations. The Research Engineer will be working with an existing team of technical experts on projects for the U.S. Navy and commercial companies. Required Skills: Four or more years of education or experience in the field of naval architecture, ocean engineering, or mechanical engineering that includes application of numerical simulation tools for structural analysis. Strong written and oral presentation skills are also required, as well as the ability to work independently in a research environment. Familiarity with major office computer applications. Desired Skills: Four or more years of working experience developing scientific or engineering software tools in the area of structural analysis. Experience with aluminum and composite structural design and analysis, including numerical modeling of strength and fatigue. Previous experience with naval architecture or ocean engineering is desired. Experience with programming in Fortran and C/C++, using MathCAD software, familiarity with the Linux operating system, and the use distributed computing system including parallel processors is desired. Education: Bachelor of Science in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field is required Masters of Science in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field is desired.
