Versatility and a Niche: Hydraulic Specialists Inc.
In 1979, Hydraulic Specialists Inc. (HSI) was a one-man operation. Ken Otto began his Oklahoma City, Okla. business slowly, "dealing locally out of a small location," an HSI representative said. Now, 30 years later, Otto is the owner and president of a multinational company anticipating continued growth well into the 21st century. From the beginning, HSI has specialized in the repair and remanufacture of hydraulic pumps. According to CFO Bruce Huck, the company "rebuilds most lines of hydraulic equipment, but concentrates on major OEM group lines including Denison, Oilgear, HPM, Rexroth... Hagglunds." The comand pany serves the aerospace, oil field, offshore oil, forging, crane rebuild, aluminum extrusion and marine industries, and services pumps from 3,000 to 10,000 PSI. Over the course of its 30 years, HSI has both expanded in size and refined its expertise. Within the first five years of business Otto took on several employees who are still with the company today. As sales increased, HSI regionalized its U.S. business and amassed an international clientele. The company headquarters in Oklahoma City now includes a 50,000 square foot facility and corporate office. Large jobs are underway in Texas, Ala., Wa., and Fla. With a team of 25 employees, HSI has begun to narrow its field to specialize in larger pumps and the 2000-5000 ton press has become a company niche. The company aims to continue growing its business by finding new areas of commerce and larger formats for exposure. "Versatility coupled with dedication to a niche marketplace" has been the key to HSI's success, Huck said. HSI also attributes its good fortune to the loyalty of its employees and the consistent leadership of Ken Otto, the man who started it all.
